Times this by 10 and you’ll be in my shoes during my application process to start a Her Campus chapter at my college.
If you’re unfamiliar with what Her Campus is, it’s basically like an online blog for college women (or, collegiettes, as they like to say). Although I hate to compare, Her Campus is similar to sites like Elite Daily and Thought Catalog.
Her Campus starts up “chapters” at a ton of colleges across the world. Basically, the head of the chapter (me) has to manage all of the girls who would like to write for the college’s Her Campus chapter. It’s like a blog focusing on things about your college. Geez, I really hope this is making sense. A little more clarification can be found here.
Since starting a chapter at my college less than a year ago, I have learned a lot. Starting a chapter at my college has had a very positive impact on daily life and college experience. Here are some of the amazing opportunities that starting a Her Campus chapter at my school has led me to achieve:
I Have Made Some Amazing Friends:
My Time Management Skills Have Increased
Good ol’ time management. You’re probably all very familiar with this. When going through the process of applying to run the chapter and all that jazz, I was told that it would be about 10-15 hours of work a week. I may or may not have thought this was an exaggeration at first… but I soon learned that it was definitely true! The time I needed to put towards working on my chapter each day has helped me with my time management skills.
I’ve Learned What It’s Like To Manage A Team
I find myself countlessly referring back to my high school sport days, wondering how the hell my coach’s did all that they did (shout out to Coach Kate & Hazen). Managing 25+ people is a lot of work. You need to make sure that everyone is on top of their game and need to make sure that you’re positively impacting their feelings about being a part of HC. I have, however, learned that the team of girls that currently write for the HC chapter at my school are absolutely fabulous.
My “Don’t Care What People Think Of You” Personality Has Increased
I have always been a little gung ho about the whole, “I don’t care about what people think of me” thing, but since starting an HC chapter at my school this trait of mine has only benefited. Being yourself in front of 25+ people every week, and even on a national website is crazy, so kudos to myself for sticking to my personal beliefs.
I’ve Gotten A Lot Of Free Things
I have, and always will be a sucker for free stuff, but then again- who isn’t? Receiving our first “Survival Kit” from Her Campus was so exciting, all of my team members were super happy! We were given products from brands like TRESemmé, and Vera Bradley.
I’ve Been Able To Be Proud Of Myself
Looking back on the time between last year and now, I would have never envisioned myself taking on such an important role. My chapter ended up being in the top 30% of Her Campus chapters worldwide. This was absolutely crazy! I would never think that a small college like SUNY Oneonta would be rated at such a high level, especially being that we had just launched the September before.
If you were or are on the fence about starting a Her Campus chapter at your college my best advice to you would be to just do it! It was a crazy start up, but I am so proud that I went with my gut and agreed to take part in such an amazing experience. I can’t wait to see how successful my chapter gets in the upcoming year!
